Finding joy in my life has not come easy. In fact, it has been long and trudging path for me. The journey back to our true Self is not an easy one. Take heart in the fact that the harder it is, the greater our capacity for joy seems to be. By learning to look at our pain as an opportunity, it liberates us from a life of painful imprisonment. It opens us up to be able to see the joy available to us always. When we can see that there is always more than one way to look at every situation, we are opened up to choices. When we can see that life is in fact a story we are telling, then we are free to choose the way we tell it.
The knowledge that we can choose how we perceive a situation is our secret weapon. I believe it may actually give us super-powers in any anxiety producing situations, if we employ it. If we can step back and see that there may indeed be another way of looking at the anxiety producing situation, we can avoid backing ourselves into a corner. For once we are in that corner, our fight or flight survival mechanism kicks in and we are sunk. Our ego has won that particular battle.
It is not enough to just stop cold turkey to reacting with fear to situations as they arise. Nature abhors a vacuum. So in order to change our old default way of perception, we must replace it with a new way. I call this reframing. We do this by creating a new story out of the old one. We learn to have faith that all is well in this moment. Remember, the Law of Attraction tells us that we get more of what we think about. So if we are consumed by fear, more will always show up. So we must find the positive, the hope, in the situation and hang onto that hope will all our might. Remember, all we need is faith the size of a mustard seed in order that we may turn things around.
This way of thinking is a new practice for living a happy life, and it takes quite a while to make it a habit. It is my hope that this book will give you some tools, so each day you can meditate on an idea that will help you to live your amazing life.
Sometimes life gives us sad situations, that is for sure. When it does, we need to give ourselves time to feel our sadness and heal. But, even in the saddest moments there are beacons of light to grasp onto. We must look for those beacons, and find some small goodness in the sadness. Remember, life is a story written by us, so we can write it any way that brings us more joy. Close your eyes and see things in a way that brings you joy. Life is amazing and we do not want to waste a second of it by remaining in pain any longer than need be.
Reframing Moment: What can you do today to help you get out of your pain, so you can experience this amazing life? Can you do an exercise to help you be able to put down that bag of resentment, once and for all? Remember, you can only be in creativity or you can be in ego, not in both. Creativity equals joy. Ego equals pain. So which experience do you desire? A little trick I have developed is to make two columns on a piece of paper. On the first column I write out my resentment. On the second column I write how I would LOVE to have that situation look. Then I close my eyes and imagine that it is that way. I allow myself to feel the joy I would feel in my dream vision. I then meditate on the fact that I have two choices. I can be either right or happy. I choose happiness! I try to maintain a soft heart with the issue at hand, and know my dream vision is indeed possible. I try and treat that situation like it is the way I would have it be. I repeat this as many times as I need to through out the day. This is not an easy exercise, but you will see great benefit from entertaining even the tiniest bit of possibility here. And as time goes on, you will find yourself looking at the situations that used to cause you anxiety as interesting events that have potential to bring you miracles. Go ahead and accept those gifts!
I think faith is the small mustard seed of opportunities every day. For example, 'Am I going to love this person? Am I going to share my faith with this person? Am I going to pray that little prayer?' It really is a daily thing where you seize those little mustard seed opportunities and then see what God does.
